Clicking, catching and the Pokédex

How searching, catching and the Pokédex work.

The core loop is a click. Each click on the grass may turn up a wild Pokémon; the rate depends on where you are and what your lead Pokémon can do. Some abilities change how often something appears, and some change what it is carrying.

The Pokédex and the Worlddex↑

Your own Pokédex records what you have seen and caught. The Worlddex is different: it is a single global registry of first catches, shared by every player. Only the first person to catch a given species and variant is recorded there, and the database enforces it — two simultaneous claims cannot both win.
